GOVERNOR'S SCHOLAR kylie

Kylie Cosner, a junior at Casey County High School, has been accepted in the Governor's Scholars Program for the summer of 2018.  The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky who are rising seniors. The Program originated in 1983 as a result of Kentucky leaders’ concern that the state’s “best and brightest” were leaving the Commonwealth to pursue educational and career opportunities elsewhere without fully understanding the potential of their talents at home. Students who are selected attend the Program without charge. In the spirit of partnership, the Office of the Governor, the Kentucky State Legislature, and private enterprise come together to provide the financial support for the Program.
The Program’s mission is to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders. The first class numbered 230 and was housed on one college campus. Since then, the Program has enjoyed excellent support and grown to over 1,000 students on three campuses.

LEVEL FIVE CERTIFICATION coffey award

Casey County Board Member advanced in professional development
February 13, 2018 – The Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA) has awarded a certificate of advanced training in school leaders to a member of the Casey County Board of Education.
Marilyn Coffey has achieved Level Five Certification in KSBA Academy of Studies, the highest level offered in the Academy of Studies.
Kentucky law mandates hours of select training based on each board member’s years of service. The lower levels of KSBA’s Academy of Studies include courses such as a basics of board’s role, school finance, superintendent evaluations and facilities planning. As a board member advances in the certification process, the courses become less general and more specific to issues, such as evaluating the board’s own effectiveness, doing advanced budget planning, becoming better advocates for children, and grasping the board’s responsibilities in school and student assessment and accountability.
“School board members are elected by their community to make decisions to better educate all students in the district,” said KSBA President David Webster, chairman of the Simpson County Board of Education. “These school board members strive to better service their communities by continuing their education and training. They have gone above and beyond the required training by the state to complete the KSBA Academy of Studies and to excel, not just for themselves, but also for the betterment of the schools in their communities.”
“We want to recognize these exceptional board members and let the community know how they are representing them in their work,” Webster said.

GEAR UP WEEK gu

For National Gear Up Week Casey County High School did some college knowledge type games and  some activities to lift educational aspirations.  First, we sent out remind trivia challenges each day for the first so many students to be able to tell us what FAFSA stood for, or one way to earn free money for college, etc., and the winners got a prize.  This also encouraged kids to sign up for the remind text app so we can continue to keep them in the know about what is going on at school.  We also made a lot of feathers in our school colors, we called them future feathers, students are writing their future word on them and we are making a set of wings (we are still in the process of this, the principal is building a set of plywood, freestanding wings for the feathers to go on) Once finished, kids will be able to take pics with our CCHS Rebel Wings, and finally we kicked off our 'This is US' wall- kids are bringing in any object or item that defines who we are and they will be put together in a collage on one wall in the stairwell from ceiling to floor and the center will read 'This is US'!  We hope to inspire pride in our community and school with this project.  The group of seniors we lovingly call Rebel Crew, a mentoring group, have been instrumental in a lot of the behind the scenes work that has gone into organizing it all. Below are some pics from the week, and there are more in a second email.  We love our Rising Rebels at Casey County High School, and Gear Up helps us help them rise!!
