Weather Guidelines-School Closing

Wintry forecasts, severe weather, or poor road conditions can prompt Casey County Schools to change routines or daily schedules in the district. It's a good idea to prepare in advance, especially if you need to arrange child care. We make the announcements as soon as possible with several outlet options: local news, social media, the district's website, and via phone calls, texts, and emails to our families.

Please take a moment to confirm or update your family's contact information and communication preferences in Infinite Campus to ensure you receive our notifications.

Whenever possible, Casey County Schools uses non-traditional instruction (NTI) in place of school closings for severe weather. NTI allows students to continue learning when weather conditions make it unsafe to attend school and enables the district to potentially avoid extending the school year to make up for cancellations.

Expect to receive NTI specifics from your principal and/or child's teachers. If you have questions about Google Classroom, student email accounts, Chromebooks, or other NTI tools, please contact your school.

Students' safety is our top priority. Depending on the conditions, Casey County Schools has these choices:

  • Use NTI (non-traditional instruction)
  • Cancel school
  • Delay the start of school
  • Dismiss school early

Our goal is to let you know of changes as soon as possible, preferably the evening before the affected school day. However, the weather is unpredictable, and sometimes we must make an early morning decision.

Weather Watch

During winter, the Superintendent, Transportation Director, and other district employees monitor the weather conditions. When temperatures are predicted to reach extreme lows, Casey County Schools considers a combination of factors -- including temperature, wind chill, precipitation, road conditions, sidewalk conditions, and weather forecasts – in deciding whether to use an NTI day, cancel school, or delay the start of school.

Cold Weather

The district has not set a specific temperature but would start considering changing the school schedule if temperatures were forecast to be below 0 degrees.

In October 2024, the National Weather Advisory changed how it classified advisories.

The National Weather Service Advisory

If an Extreme Cold Warning or an Extreme Cold Watch is initiated, the school district will start planning to change the school schedule.

Cold Weather Advisory does not always constitute a change to the school schedule.  Before initiating a change, several factors, such as timing, longevity, etc., would be taken into account.

Student safety is the district’s top priority, and we try to ensure that school buildings are warm, safe, and ideal place for students to be when the weather is extremely cold.

Casey County Schools relies on families to make sure children are dressed appropriately. Students need winter hats, gloves, heavy coats, socks, and shoes/boots. Layering thin pieces of dry clothing is best in extremely low temperatures. If you need help with winter clothing, please ask at your child's school.

Reminder

Weather and road conditions vary throughout Casey County. One end of the county might be clear, while other areas of town are dangerous. With student safety as the guiding priority, Casey County Schools makes decisions based on what's best for the community.

The district also respects the right of each family to make different choices based on what they feel is best for their children's safety.

During A Non-Traditional Event

A. The district “Send-it” system will notify families that a certain day is designated as non-traditional learning day (i.e. NTI day #3)

B. NTI events will be posted on the district's Facebook page.

C. Information sent to Radio and TV Stations to be announced Casey County Schools Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) plan will ensure the continuation of learning on days when the entire district is closed due to health or safety reasons. Casey County Schools will ensure proper documentation of the use of NTI days, reasons for use, and student and teacher participation rates.

Student Participation

1) Casey County School district will use a blended delivery method for non-traditional instruction. All students will join their respective teacher’s Google classroom in the fall/spring semester. Instructional resources and materials inside the virtual classroom will be content related and/or project based and aligned to (KAS) Kentucky Academic Standards. However, to provide equity to all students, a hard copy of each instructional activity will be provided as an alternative source upon individual request with the classroom teacher. Each of the five schools within the district will utilize Google Meet and Google Classroom as their digital learning platform. Access to these tools can be located in the students google suite. On days that school is canceled, students and parents will be notified of non-traditional instruction for that day. Students/Teachers will follow their traditional day schedule which may be modified for times to meet, however the schedule structure will remain the same. Teachers will be available during planning times to assist parents and students as needed. The expectation will be for all students to attend class and submit their work in a timely manner. Students that request hard copies of the assignment must submit work within two days of returning to traditional instruction. All lessons will be developed in conjunction with the digital lessons so they are fully aligned. These lessons will be based on state and district curriculum standards. Work will be graded, feedback given, and a review of all documents will be conducted by instructional leaders in each school. Student attendance/participation will be monitored in one of the following ways:

● One-to-one video communication or phone call between teacher and student (or teacher and parent with smaller children or student with special needs) may occur as needed.

● For the majority of students, utilizing a district-provided device, group video communication between the teacher and the whole class (or small groups) will occur via Google Classroom and/or Google Meet.

● Submission of paper-based assignments for students in a non-digital setting will also indicate participation.
