School Closing/NTI
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we enter the winter season, Casey County Schools remains committed to the safety, well-being, and education of every student. Please take a moment to review the following information regarding our district’s inclement-weather procedures.
We understand that any mention of snow can bring both excitement and anxiety. Please remember, ALWAYS ASSUME SCHOOL IS IN SESSION unless you receive an official notification from Casey County Schools.
How Can Families Be Prepared?
Winter weather can be unpredictable, and conditions may require Casey County Schools to adjust daily schedules. To help us communicate effectively, please ensure your child’s school has current phone numbers and emergency contacts.
We also encourage families to make childcare plans in advance in case school is dismissed early or unexpectedly closed.
How Will the Decision to Cancel or Delay School Be Made?
Casey County Schools uses a coordinated team approach when evaluating winter weather. When snow, ice, or freezing temperatures are expected, the Superintendent, Director of Transportation, Safe Schools Coordinators, and other spotters hit the roads at 4:30 am to monitor the road conditions and travel designated routes early to assess:
-
Road conditions across the county
-
Sidewalks, parking lots, and bus turnarounds
-
Air and road temperatures, wind chill, and expected precipitation
Once the team gathers adequate information, one guiding question is asked:
Is it safe to transport students in current or predicted conditions?
When weather impacts travel, the district may implement one of the following:
-
School Cancellation
-
Delay in the school starting time
-
Non-Traditional Instruction Day (NTI)
-
Early Dismissal
If a decision cannot be made the night before, Casey County Schools will make an announcement no later than 6:00 AM.
Please note: School can still be in session, and some bus routes may be canceled. Due to Casey County's large area, only small areas can be affected by the weather at times. If this is the case, we reserve the right to cancel some bus routes to ensure the safety of all and still keep school in session.
How Will Families Be Notified?
Once a weather-related decision is made, we will communicate quickly through:
-
ParentSquare text alerts
-
Casey County Schools Facebook page
-
Local Media
If school is canceled, the announcement may refer to a Traditional Snow Day, No School, Closed, or NTI Day, depending on the situation.

NTI SCHEDULE
Cold Weather
The district has not set a specific temperature but would start considering changing the school schedule if temperatures were forecast to be below 0 degrees.
In October 2024, the National Weather Advisory changed how it classified advisories.
The National Weather Service Advisory
If an Extreme Cold Warning or an Extreme Cold Watch is initiated, the school district will start planning to change the school schedule.
A Cold Weather Advisory does not always constitute a change to the school schedule. Before initiating a change, several factors, such as timing, longevity, etc., would be taken into account.
Student safety is the district’s top priority, and we try to ensure that school buildings are warm, safe, and ideal place for students to be when the weather is extremely cold.
Casey County Schools relies on families to make sure children are dressed appropriately. Students need winter hats, gloves, heavy coats, socks, and shoes/boots. Layering thin pieces of dry clothing is best in extremely low temperatures. If you need help with winter clothing, please ask at your child's school.
Reminder
Weather and road conditions vary throughout Casey County. One end of the county might be clear, while other areas of town are dangerous. With student safety as the guiding priority, Casey County Schools makes decisions based on what's best for the community.
The district also respects the right of each family to make different choices based on what they feel is best for their children's safety.
